Will this be your first time applying for a teaching job overseas?

Athough many Korean schools prefer ESL teachers with previous experience, many schools in Korea also prefer recent graduates and applicants with no previous ESL experience at all. Gone2Korea represents dozens of established Language schools in every major city that are interested in hiring inexperienced, but enthusiastic, first time ESL teachers.

The reason for this mentality is; many teaching jobs have specific models in place for teachers to use and implement in the classroom. Some employers feel that people without experience are easier to train thus making things easier for the school. A lot of experienced ESL teachers already have their teaching styles and methods developed and changing over to a new system can, at times, be difficult or undesirable.

What are the primary character traits schools are looking for in first time ESL teachers?

Above and beyond all work related experiences and qualifications, schools care more about the teacher's personality than anything else. As long as you have a friendly and outgoing personality, in addition to a legitimate interest in teaching, then there are going to be credible job opportunities at recognized schools available.

Salaries in Korea for first time teachers and recent graduates

Most first time ESL teachers can expect to make 2 million won-2.2 million won a month in the private sector and 1.9 million won-2.1 million won in the public sector.

If you have no experience and are expecting to make 2.5 million won or more each month then chances are we won¡¯t be able to help you. Yes, we realize there are certain jobs posted on various sites and forums that offer substantially more, however, if you read the fine print or actually apply for the job you will likely find they are looking for someone who has specific qualifications or is willing to work above and beyond the normal 30 hour work week. Many sneaky recruiters post jobs online with really high wages in order to get more people to apply, however, once you make contact they send you offer's for substantially less.

It is important to understand that there are industry standards in Korea and rarely do employers offer salaries above and beyond these standards. Additionally, private schools employ numerous western teachers and it¡¯s not possible for them to offer higher salaries to specific individuals when they already employ people (with the same qualifications) who are making a set amount...it would cause too many issues between co-workers.
